The End of the Garden…

Everything Has Its Time

Ecclesiastes 3:1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…

We’re expecting a hard freeze. I’ve spent the past three weeks taking cuttings, moving things into the greenhouse, and preparing everything for Winter. I’m tired. It’s time to let the garden and myself rest (except for the fact that I still have calves to wean!) and start dreaming about what next year will bring.

Reflecting on the Many Reasons My Garden Isn’t How I Want It To Be.

10. Cattle. If I could take all of the hours I spend with cattle, the garden would be better weeded and better organized. Plus, the cattle are a big part of a somewhat steady income from farming and ranching, and we’re pretty set on that. Can’t quit my job yet!

9. Western Kansas Weather. Nuf’ said. Ugh.

8. My head has too many tabs open. Yes, this farm has made multi-tasking a necessity, but why should I focus on just one garden task when I can walk around the corner of the house and find three more things to do, only to not remember what I was originally working on!

7. Weeds. A flower out of place, my ***! No matter how hard I work at it, just leave a little bit and you start all over again. As I get older, things, like violets, that I used to consider to be weeds are now welcomed. Come on, spreading little primrose! You can now take over that entire area and I won’t bother you again!

6. Desk Work. I’m trying to remember why I took over all of the bookkeeping when Bill and I got married…

5. Stupid me. I take on too many plants and ideas that are a result of wishful thinking. Reality of the semi-arid place likes to kick me in the teeth. Hence, my beautiful greenhouse, where only slugs and mealy bugs truly test my patience.

4. Harvest. We are blessed to have the ability to harvest our own crops. I get to spend hours on the semis, which is great fun (wink wink), but I could be in the garden!

3. The government. I feel like almost anything can be blamed on them.

2. My piano. But really, all of the above reasons are why I don’t get to sit down and make much music either.

And the number one reason my garden isn’t perfect? Did I mention cattle?!

Job 8:16 He thrives before the sun, and his shoots spread over his garden.
